The municipality of Freienbach lies on the left shore of upper Lake Zurich at the foot of the Etzel mountain. The Zurich – Chur and Romanshorn – Arth-Goldau – Lucerne transport routes intersect here.

The Seedamm (lake dam) connects the municipality of Freienbach with the city of Rapperswil-Jona. Together, they form the centre of the Obersee (Upper Lake Zurich) agglomeration.
